Fences for sheep

Our woolly friends sometimes like to rub up against the fence, in which case sturdiness as well as safety is an absolute must. Don't forget the threats from outside that you need to protect your sheep from.

De Sutter Naturally produces fences and gates for sheep with an authentic rural look and high-quality wire mesh. Everything to make sure you can sleep on both ears!

Choosing the right fence for your sheep

The importance of the right sheep fence for your specific situation can hardly be underestimated. At De Sutter Naturally, we have all the expertise to help you get started. Here are some factors to consider when purchasing one.

  1. Type of fenceThe fact that sheep like to rub against fences makes sturdiness a prerequisite. On the other hand, it is best to choose durable materials that can withstand all kinds of weather conditions.
  2. Wire mesh fencesWire mesh is the most budget-friendly option anyway. In this type of sheep fence, wire mesh is stretched between the posts. It is an excellent protection against predators and keeps sheep and lambs inside.
  3. Wooden fencesFor a more stylish look, we also offer wooden sheep fences, where wooden beams are then placed between the posts.

These beams provide extra strength. And they give a nice look to your domain, ideal for those who value aesthetics. If you want extra protection, you can always use wire mesh between the beams.

You can choose between hardwood and softwood. Hardwood is the most durable option and will last at least 30 years. The more budget-friendly softwood has a lifespan of up to 20 years thanks to our unique Densiforce® production method.

  4. Composite fencesIn addition to wire mesh and wood, you can also opt for a more ecological solution. Our composite sheep fences are made from recycled PMD waste. Reco Infinity is a modern and sustainable alternative to more traditional fences.
  5. Types of meshesIf you opt for sheep mesh, in your wire mesh fences or between the wooden beams, you have the choice of a fixed or X-knot. And it doesn't stop there, because the mesh size also matters:

    - Knot

The two types of knots have everything to do with a different technique for connecting wires in mesh fencing. An X-knot offers a flexible connection, while with a fixed knot the structure is a bit more robust and less springy.

    - Mesh size

Choose sheep mesh with meshes or openings of 8-15 cm to prevent sheep from getting stuck. Smaller meshes (5-8 cm) are ideal for lambs, keeping even the youngest animals safe and sound within the domain.

  6. Height of fenceTo keep sheep from breaking out, a height of at least 1 meter is recommended. For breeds that tend to jump, a height of 1.2 meters may be necessary.
  7. Country or modern sheep fencesOur fences come in a variety of styles, from sleek and modern to warm and rustic, so they blend effortlessly with any setting. And that's not all, because you also have a choice of colors. For example, we even have a black fence for sheep in our range.
  8. Extra protectionIn areas with predators, consider giving your fence extra protection by adding fence wire or an extra layer of sheep wire.
