Grenen versus vuren: wat is het verschil?
About wood
Having a new fence, gate or shelter for your animals put up? These are made from suitable timber, namely pine or spruce. But what is the difference? Why is the fencing always in pine but a gate, for instance, in spruce?

First and foremost, the similarities. Both types of timber originate from Scandinavia and are pressure treated before being used. But each also has their own features.

Red Norway pine

We use Red Norway pine (RNG) as standard, the best of the best. In contrast to the lower cost alternatives, this type of tree grows more slowly, so that the rings are tightly packed. Result? A very strong type of timber.

What makes RNG so special?

  • Fibres with a very open structure. This makes them ideally suited to pressure treatment after drying out.
  • Better resistance to moisture thanks to deeper penetration from the pressure treatment.
  • Large knots and irregular structure
  • Ideal for fencing: SquareOklahomaWindsor and Safety

Spruce

Spruce remains a winner for applications other than fencing.

What typifies spruce?

  • Fibres with a tight structure that almost completely close up after drying out
  • Stronger and more stable than RNG
  • Pressure treatment does not penetrate as deep, and poorer resistance to moisture or water
  • Highly suitable for the Dublin gate and shelter
  • Small and regular knots

Sawing and pressure treatment

Pine and spruce are processed/sawn in the same way. The trunk is sawn into four, because the heartwood is unsuitable. This is always difficult to pressure treat and splits more easily.

Both types of wood are dried out first for two to four weeks in an oven. They are also machined immediately with a view to optimal pressure treatment and durability.

And what about the price?

The bigger the tree, the better the quality and the more expensive the timber.

The choice of timber thus depends entirely on the application. You get fencing from us in RNG and gates and shelters in spruce. Your guarantee for a long-lasting result. Want to know more about our fencing, gates and stables?
