Especially in the area of materials we have seen a strong evolution. The concept of 'sustainability' has taken on a completely different meaning. In the past, this was very much related to the lifespan of a fence. It had to last a long time, a long time to earn back the investment. Ecology was not so high on the agenda at the time. That these creosote products could cause soil pollution or irritation to the animals, was little known at the time and what was known, did not cause any concern.
At De Sutter Naturally, however, we seized every opportunity to distance ourselves from these types of products. Soon we introduced tropical wood species that are at least as durable, but do not cause irritation, contain no toxins and blend better into the landscape.
This was followed by other forms of impregnation with less durability, but also with few or no disadvantages. Today, sustainability means much more than just the lifespan; it also includes the impact on the environment, the welfare of people and animals, and even how and where it is extracted.
Sustainability has been a core value for us right from the start. In addition to sustainable products, we also conduct our business in a sustainable manner. For example, we heat our buildings CO2-neutrally, we generate our own solar energy and every year we support a good cause.
